Lessons to Learn
The recent revelations about how Cambridge Analytica exploited the personal information of Facebook users is yet another worrying reminder about the collection of our Personal Information: how much data has been collected, and of how little control we have over once we have given our Personal Information to these Data Firms.
Unfortunately, the General Data Protection Regulation privacy laws that are coming into force across Europe in May 2018 may improve practices, but they will not change the governing rule of thumb: legislation labels those who gather our data as “controllers”. We are mere “subjects.” Pretty much, if something is free, then you are the product.
It could be pertinent to check the T&C’s of your favourite social media system – especially when they share your Personal Data, as Facebook does.
Within these Social Media outlets, apps and games are created with the sole purpose to harvest your data – whenever you click an app and allow it to gather your Personal Information this is where it ends up, Cambridge Analytica and its likes.
Your Personal Data will be used, sold and bought without you having any say over the matter – as I said in a previous paragraph: if something is free, you are the product – and this is especially true with Social Media.
I am not advocating a return to the Neolithic period, merely to say, in times of political uncertainty to tread carefully. I realise that I may have raised more questions than I have answered with this Blog post. However, all I can say is: if it is free, you are the product.
