Could your website be hacked right now?

A client came to me not long ago with a problem they had been putting off for months. Every time they tried to update their WordPress site, it crashed. So they stopped trying. The updates piled up. The plugins got older. And in the background, without anyone noticing, the site became a security risk.

When I got in there, the plugins were so out of date that known security holes existed in them. Hackers do not need to be clever. They just need to find a site that has not been looked after. This one would have been easy to find.

I backed everything up, then worked through the updates one by one. There were plugin conflicts throughout – the kind that take time and specialist knowledge to unpick. It was not a quick job. But the alternative was leaving a live website open to attack.

This is not a one-off story. I see versions of it regularly.

What website maintenance actually covers

Maintenance is not glamorous. It is the stuff that keeps a website safe, fast, and working the way it should. That means:

  • Keeping WordPress, your theme, and your plugins up to date
  • Running regular backups so there is always a clean copy to restore from
  • Checking your site loads quickly and works on mobile
  • Making sure contact forms, booking tools, and any other features are still functioning
  • Watching for security alerts on the software your site runs on

None of this happens on its own. And most business owners do not have the time or the inclination to stay on top of it – which is completely understandable. It is not your job.

What happens when you leave it

The most common outcome is not a dramatic hack. It is a slow decline. Pages load a bit slower. Something stops working and nobody notices for weeks. A plugin throws up an error that confuses visitors. Your Google ranking quietly drops because the site is not performing the way it should.

The more serious outcome is a security breach. Outdated plugins with known vulnerabilities are one of the most common ways websites get compromised. If your site is hacked, you are looking at potential data loss, a Google warning that blocks visitors, and the cost and stress of getting it cleaned up. That is before you consider what it does to your reputation if clients find out.

It is a bit like skipping your car’s MOT. It might be fine for a while. Eventually it is not, and the repair bill is bigger than the service would ever have been.

How often does a site actually need attention?

For most small business websites, once a month is the minimum. That covers security updates, plugin and theme updates, and a basic check that everything is working. Weekly attention makes sense if your site handles bookings, payments, or anything time-sensitive.

The key thing is that it happens on a schedule, not only when something breaks.

Can you do it yourself?

Yes, if you are comfortable in WordPress and you know what to look out for. The risk is that plugin updates can sometimes cause conflicts – like the ones I described above – and if you do not know how to diagnose and fix those, you can end up with a site that is down or broken.

If you would rather hand it off, I offer maintenance plans that cover updates, backups, hosting, and security checks. Monthly plans start at £45 a month. Weekly plans are £75/month. Either way, I send you a short report so you know what has been done.

If your site has not been touched in a while and you are not sure what state it is in, the sensible first step is an audit. I can tell you what needs attention and what can wait.

If you read this and a question came up, I am happy to talk it through. Everyone is coming from a different angle, but I offer a chat about your project with no obligation. You do not have to have a brief ready. Most people just want to know if what they have in mind is achievable and what it might cost. Let's talk about your project.
