Project Brief

Julian was starting his business in a crowded market – there are already a lot of trading electricians in Harrogate & District. Julian needed to have a website that set out his stall and acknowledged his passion for well-designed architecture.

The brief was along the lines of not having a website that looks like an electrician’s website. There needed to be finesse and a graceful touch.

I built this site all in browser – relying on User research and feedback from the owner. We decided on a clean Sans Serif typeface and with a focus on SEO. The target audience for the website was 35yr olds – 65 yr old, respectable home owners. Julian did not want to bite in to an already saturated market, to steal clients from other electricians. He wanted his business to come through his site or his Instagram account.

Designing Solutions

I needed to make a quick way for Clients to reach out to Julian and to also see past work. Julian had been documenting his work skilfully on his work Instagram account – I managed to integrate his Instagram stream with his WordPress website so that it looks like a portfolio. And, he can update it in his own terms by posting on Instagram.

Next Steps

I am in regular contact with Julian – he is a great guy – and we are constantly looking for ways to improve his site. The first thing I hope to do in the New Year is to get his “Services” Pages just how he wants them.

I will be monitoring footfall on his website so I can gauge how the improvements are taken. Julian is part of a Maintenance plan so I am available to help him as and when.

This was great fun! Julian is a great guy and I have recommended him, as an electrician, to two dear friends who needed work doing on their house. The site is backed up on a monthly basis to my Dropbox account so if anything does go wrong then there are plenty of reserves.

I believe that Julian’s website fits the brief – he needed a website that stood out as a ‘design fan’ and not a jobbing electrician. I am confident that we have achieved that. Julian seems happy with it and I am very happy with it – it ticks all the boxes.
