Guerrilla Dub System
I have recently completed a redesign for a duo of local dub reggae DJs - they had succcess in the charts a while ago.
About the project
Green Door Studio's site supports Roots Conversation, their community radio show with a loyal following in Harrogate. The old site worked, but it felt plain. It did not reflect the energy of the music or the personality of the DJs, and nothing on it encouraged anyone to look twice. My job was to give it more visual interest without losing any ground on accessibility.
March 2018

My role
I worked alone on the full redesign: research, content, user experience and the build itself. I checked ideas with the DJs throughout, rather than disappearing and presenting a finished thing at the end.
What I found
I ran a short questionnaire with listeners in Harrogate, asking about their habits, what they expected from the site and what would actually bring them back to it.
A few things came back clearly. People liked the show but rarely visited the site. They wanted something that felt more alive. They cared about simple navigation and readable content. And accessibility mattered, because the audience spans a wide age range.
Those findings shaped everything that followed.
What I changed
The new site keeps the same simple structure, but adds more energy through the visuals and the content around them. I focused on three things.
Brighter, richer visuals to give the site some genuine personality. Clearer content that supports fast scanning, so people can act on what they read rather than wade through it. And strong accessibility foundations, so none of that comes at anyone's expense.
I kept the layout clean and avoided clutter, using contrast, spacing and readable typography to do the accessibility work quietly, in the background, rather than as a separate add-on.
The result
The response from listeners has been good. Several emailed the DJs directly to say they preferred the new look and found it easier to use. The DJs have told me their audience is more willing to visit the site now, and to look around at recent updates rather than just checking one page and leaving.
What I learned
Designing for accessibility does not mean designing without style. With the right choices in colour, spacing and hierarchy, a site can feel lively and be genuinely inclusive at the same time. Those two things get treated as a trade-off more often than they should.
What I want you to take away
If your agency has a client who thinks a redesign just means a new look, this is the kind of research-led process I bring to white label work too: find out what people actually want before changing anything.

A Web Designer in Harrogate
This project is one example of the web design work I do for small businesses across Harrogate and beyond. Every site I build comes with fixed pricing agreed upfront, and I stay around after launch so you are never left on your own. You can read more about my web design services or tell me about your project.
