Born in Moscow, Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg were pivotal figures in Soviet design. Originally Swedish citizens, they became Russian in 1933. Educated at the Stroganov School of Arts and Crafts and Moscow Free Studios, they began designing propaganda posters in 1918.

As founding members of the Society of Young Artists (obmokhu), they exhibited their work extensively.

The brothers, with Konstantin Medunetskii, staged the “Constructivists” exhibition in 1922, highlighting their avant-garde approach. Members of the Institute of Artistic Culture, they also designed sets for Alexander Tairov’s Kamerny Theatre and became renowned for their film posters. After Georgii’s death in 1933, Vladimir continued in graphic design until his death in 1982.

Their legacy lives on in the Sternberg font.
